Investors, what do you think of these funds?

OPGSX and SGDAX
I’m well allocated and would like to be exposed to this sector.
I’m thinking of either or both of these funds, or pure physical gold for my IRA.
The decision is made already to invest in the gold / minerals sector, I’m just trying to decide where specifically.

Thanks.

The chart for both of those looks identical, so there isn’t really much point in owning both. It’s not diversification if you are owning essentially the exact same thing, but with a different name.

I think you are better off with a gold ETF… you won’t pay as many fees.

Hope you’re a long term investor, bad time to add precious metals to a portfolio. Anyway, out of the two you mention, I like OPGSX. I’ve owned VGPMX. Cut back on it lately. I prefer my fund over both of your choices…fees. Tough to buy actual gold for an IRA account, not sure if it’s even allowed as an IRA asset.

Its a little late to be getting on the gold bandwagon, its not likely to continue its run, and there are a number of factors that will reduce its upside potential. But if you feel like you must have it in your portfolio you are making the right choice by investing in the gold stocks, and not the physical commodity. I’d choose OPGSX, not quite as concentrated, lower fees, lower volatility, better manager, longer track record. The one thing I noticed was that OPGSX performed better prior to the big rally in gold, which to me means it is better positioned to deal with a downturn in gold, which is due to the fact that its not as concentrated and has exposure to other metals besides gold.
